چکیده

This paper presents slicing algorithms for efficient model prototyping. The algorithms directly operate upon a non-uniform rational B-spline surface model. An adaptive slicing algorithm is developed to obtain an accurate and smooth part surface. A selective hatching strategy is employed to further reduce the build time by solidifying the kernel regions of a part with the maximum allowable thick layers while solidifying the skin areas with adaptive thin layers to obtain the required surface accuracy. In addition, it provides a generalization to the containment problem with mixed tolerances for slicing a part. The article also developed a direct method for computing skin contours for all tolerance requirements. Some case studies are presented to illustrate the developed algorithms and the selective hatching and adaptive slicing strategy. The developed algorithms have been implemented and tested on a fused deposition modeling rapid prototyping machine. Both the implementation and test results are discussed in the paper. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Efficient slicing procedure based on adaptive layer depth normal image

In layered modeling for rapid prototyping of products, compromising slicing accuracy and time is a critical issue. Based on adaptive Layer Depth Normal Image (LDNI), this paper proposes an efficient algorithm to achieve this compromise for complex Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) models. First, each primitive at the tree leaf is converted adaptively into a LDNI solid whose Boolean operation ca...

Direct slicing of STEP based NURBS models for layered manufacturing

Direct slicing of CAD models to generate process planning instructions for solid freeform fabrication may overcome inherent disadvantages of using stereolithography format in terms of the process accuracy, ease of file management, and incorporation of multiple materials. This paper will present the results of our development of a direct slicing algorithm for layered freeform fabrication. The di...

Slicing Algorithm of VRML Model in Rapid Prototyping

VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) as an international standard for Virtual Reality, has already been widely adopted for graphical representation of 3D objects over the Web. Adopting VRML model in RP (Rapid Prototyping) can reduce the precision loss which is caused by triangulation in generating STL file. Hence exploring a slicing method and software for VRML model is significant to impro...

An adaptive process planning approach of rapid prototyping and manufacturing

This paper presents an adaptive approach to improve the process planning of Rapid Prototyping/ Manufacturing (RP/M) for complex product models such as biomedical models. Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS)-based curves were introduced to represent the boundary contours of the sliced layers in RP/M to maintain the geometrical accuracy of the original models. A mixed tool-path generation algori...

Self-intersection Free and Topologically Faithful Slicing of Implicit Solid

We present a robust and efficient approach to directly slicing implicit solids. Different from prior slicing techniques that reconstruct contours on the slicing plane by tracing the topology of intersected line segments, which is actually not robust, we generate contours through a topology guaranteed contour extraction on binary images sampled from given solids and a subsequent contour simplifi...
